The Zachary Community Schools Child Nutrition Program is funded approximately 50% with Federal funds for a projected total of approximately $1,000,000.00 per year.  For this reason, the United States Department of Agriculture requires by law the use of Child Nutrition Funds, to the maximum extent practicable, to “Buy America”. The Buy America provision, as defined in section 12(n) of the National School Lunch Act, requires schools to purchase, to the maximum extent practicable, domestic commodities and products. A domestic commodity or product means an agricultural commodity that is processed in the United States, and/or a food product that is processed in the United States substantially using agricultural commodities that are produced in the United States. Purchases made in accordance with the Buy American provision must still follow the applicable procurement rules calling for free and open competition. Any entity that purchases food or food products on behalf of the school food authority (SFA) must follow the same Buy American provisions that the SFA is required to follow.
